The Treks
Hacking out on horse back is the most magical way of exploring the St Davids peninsular. We have opened up some of the most beautiful parts of our farm so that much of the trek routes are off road.
Riding in small groups not only allows us to cater for differing levels of experience, it means you get a fully guided tour of the area including the ruins of a medieval castle, the Bishops Palace and St David’s Cathedral. It is also an ideal way of seeing the flora and fauna of the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park as our experienced trek guides point out some of its secrets whether that be rare flowers, nesting buzzards or romping badger cubs.
Beginners and experienced riders will all have the chance to ford rivers, navigate hills and valleys and see some of the hidden treasures of Penlan Farm. There really is something of interest for everyone.
Treks vary in length from 1-2 hours in the summer months with more specialist rides available over the winter period.
What you need to bring:
- Long trousers (jeans or tracksuit trousers will be fine)
- Sturdy shoes like trainers or walking boots
- Suitable clothing for the weather
- A big smile to greet your kind, gentle natured horse.
What we will supply:
- Safety Hats
- Beautiful Horses
- Professional & friendly leaders to look after you on the trek
The treks we have on offer this season are as follows:
10am & 12pm
Valley Ride 1 hour
Suitable for Beginners, Novice and Experienced riders aged 12 years and over.
This is a lovely off road route through our valley with river crossings, a medieval castle and loads of interesting flora and fauna. These are the treks we recommend for beginners but we have taken plenty of experienced riders along this route and they have really enjoyed it.
10am & 12pm
Lead rein ride
Suitable for nervous beginners and children age 5 – 12
Staying on the home farm you have time to meet and befriend your mount before riding out, lead from the ground by one of our staff. This is a very gentle introduction to horses and horse riding while still taking in some beautiful scenery. Ideal entertainment for children too young to join their parents on the Valley Ride.
Afternoons
Valleys and Bridleways 1.5 hour
Suitable for Novice and Experienced riders who are happy and in control at a walk, trot and canter
The route takes you through our valley through the river and then along the cathedral close to some bridle ways, it involves a bit of road work but we try and keep in to a minimum. This is good for riders as there are some lovely canter spots.
Mountain Ride 2.5 hour
Suitable for Novice and Experienced riders who are happy and in control at a walk, trot, canter & jump.
The mountain ride was a huge success last year so we are doing it again this year. Our permissive route with the National Trust takes you over Carn Llidi, the ‘mountain’ next to Whitesands beach. It’s a truly stunning ride with breathtaking views over the offshore islands of the Irish Sea in the South West, St Davids Head and North to Strumble Lighthouse. Its not a fast and furious ride but it is quite technical and there are a couple of canter spots on the way there and back.
Beach rides
Suitable for Novice and Experienced riders who are happy and in control at a walk, trot and canter
As Whitesands is very popular with bathers during the summer so we tend to avoid it with the treks however in the shoulder season or at low water some evenings we may well be able to include a visit to the beach in a ride.
